Criticism is expressed to represent a profession of analyzing and assessing the merits and faults of a literary or creative work, is it really! Apart from the profession how is it perceived in day to day life of a designer, how it could affect designer’s life, how it could affect designing process?

Criticism lies within you

         As a human being, the greatest power we have got over any other organism is the ‘Power to Choose’. Many theories are there on science behind choosing, but the fundamental meaning of choosing mean, criticizing between someone or something and relatively go for the best one, But if it is seen from the eyes of the designer it could be a reason for many chronic problems. Sometimes critics results in compromising many things. On the other hand criticism represent a field of extensive studies and research, but fundamentally it inherits within as a unique behavior of every individual. It refers to a whole new dimension and needs to be controlled as of situations, if not it results in the formation of designs which are self-concerned, soul-stirring and which is also dangerous for the society.

           Society forms a vital part of most of the studies, definition of society changes from person to person and depends on which domain it is considered. In designer domain, ideally society should be considered from the micro level to as large as we can think of feasibly. It means designer needs to understand the micro, meso, micro and global levels of society. Micro level structures the most significant part of society in which we human mostly interact. To be a competent critic, societal studies become imperative and demands active control over emotions and thoughts. Being a critic does not mean finding only faults, but also to find the merits in proper segments that will help in elevating designs from good to great, and will interact anti-verbally with society.

           As society is moving ahead in time, we are excelling in many fields, but lacking in fundamentals, as people are becoming nuclear and self-centered we are falling short in mutual understanding on a bigger scale. Fundamental issues regarding societal understanding are very much neglected in front of more crucial political and non-architectural issues, but the fact that we are leading towards the critical modern world can’t be denied. Apart from psychological understanding about surroundings, it is essential to understand the surrounding from within us. As said, we owe nothing from society, but the society owes everything from us. So it should be understood and applied to the self, more than anywhere else.

           At the present moment, for being a critic, the designer needs to understand, how the criticism works and how it is important in recollecting your experiences and memories. Majorly it depends on the mentality and individual’s problem processing skills (PPS), the mentality is inherited or developed gradually over a period of time and PPS is totally dependent on the individual's understanding and processing. Being a good critical designer means a finding balanced working system between cognition, recognition and rendered output. Harmony with self is the key point for any critical designer, self is your inner consciousness which keeps you reminding about every bit of your memories and experiences on the other hand your inner sub-consciousness makes you to take decisions which are habitually from your reactive experiences and are on winner’s hand.

           But the making decisions or opinions are should be from your conscious inner to control your reactive critics and prepare them to be a responsive critic. Therefore, becoming an excellent critic is a necessity of the designer and need of society…
